Indonesian Retno Hapsari dedicates herself to improving the lives of families living at Jakarta’s Cirendeu open garbage dump. Her nonprofit organization, XSProject, buys trash from these trash pickers then makes new products from the trash to sell. With sales’ proceeds and donations, XSProject pays for the education of their children as well as medical bills in the trash picker community. Filmed on location in Jakarta, Indonesia and Denton, Texas, with music by North Texas recording artists, D’Drum and Camille Cortinas, RETNO’S REFUSAL shares one remarkable woman’s vision for rethinking how we deal with trash. She refuses to ignore the social and environmental destruction caused by what we throw away. Retno’s invitation: Make a difference in your own community for tomorrow’s generation. |
